Bec Tonks - Neo Gothic.jpg

I am a UK based artist and published illustrator creating artwork using a mix of mediums including acrylics, inks and gouache.

I have worked as a designer for many years and have been extremely lucky to travel the world with my career after graduating in 2004 with a first-class honours degree in contour fashion. After having my three children I found myself increasingly drawn back to my first love of painting and art. From a very young age I found great joy and solace in painting.

My artwork is underpinned by the emotions I have experienced from the places I have visited throughout my life. These include vibrant and rugged landscapes, coastal holidays shared with my family and inspired by journeys past and present. Each piece embodies feelings evoked from a loved location or a cherished memory, from the romance of a country retreat with stunning architecture to the refreshing joy of a warm sea breeze.

My creative process starts by building colours and shapes using the medium of acrylic paints and inks. I expand on this through adding layers of colour blocking with drips and love the unexpected nature of the materials alongside the structure of initial sketching and composition. Predominantly working from my home studio in Staffordshire, I also paint with gouache and love to experiment with mixed media when I feel the artwork calls for it.

Current work...

Illustration: one children’s book published and two currently being illustrated. My first book The Long Journey Home is predicted to be part of a three book series so I anticipate two further books in the collection to illustrate.

Prior to lockdown I was due to attend numerous primary schools as part of my first book tour and present illustration workshops to early years.

I run art classes in affiliation with a local bistro offering ‘Art & Afternoon Tea’, these have a good group of regular amateur artists now in attendance.

I also volunteer in the local primary academy, teaching art to year 3 and 4 classes to help develop an initial love of art and creativity.

I am a member of the Essington Art group which meet weekly to paint and create together.
