As a graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design, I have worked in Irish Design for over 15 years. Being a Mum of three, I craved my own creative voice...I am now a mixed media artist working from my home studio in Co.Kildare.
I create in response to my love of nature and natural materials. With a passion for making contemporary, sustainable art, I have honed in on the ancient, painting process of encaustic, meaning ‘to burn in’. Using molten Irish beeswax, crystallized tree sap, and raw pigment, my handmade medium is in synergy with the ‘green’ art initiative. (zero waste, plastic, and solvent free)
Heat is used throughout the process - The molten medium is poured or applied with natural, bristle brushes in layers to a wooden board. Each layer is fused with a torch to the previous one. While working the medium, I’m drawn to its aroma, malleability, and the luminous effect of light penetrating the layers. Its fluid nature forces me to be flexible. I get lost in the creative process and wander in ‘landscapes’. I have a strong affinity for the sea and coastline in my paintings.
Playing with a complementary color palette, oil sticks and metallic pigments excite me.
Layers of molten pigment are then incised and scraped away with potter’s tools to reveal what lies beneath.
Dry brush techniques build textures, honeycomb-like, giving depth. My dimensional landscape grows organically to convey a sense of place, a natural rhythm, a feeling within.
I exhibit in both solo and group art shows across Leinster, my artwork is currently showing at the Inniscara Gallery, Co.Dublin.
