Mark Burrell was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1965, but now lives and works on the East Kent coast.
His distinctive style strives for an economy of means, the attempt is to do the most, with the least. He is highly sensitive in his use of materials. Substances are often used spectacularly. Mark seeks to make the ordinary, extraordinary.
As the artist explains, “In order to understand the world around us, sometimes you need to focus on a small bit of it, you need to look very closely at what is close at hand and make it a representation of the whole”.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art with honours from Leeds Polytechnic and a Masters's degree in Fine Art from UEA at the Norfolk Institute of Art & Design.
He was a finalist in the Hunting Prize, Mall Galleries, London in 1987. He co-founded Gatehouse Studios in Leeds, West Yorkshire from 1988 - 1990. Exhibited in many groups shows at The Design and Innovation Centre, Leeds. He was also the co-owner of Fine Art for Business, Leeds, from 1990 to 1991 and participated in the group show - 'Prime' at the Norfolk Gallery in 1993.
