Mark’s career as a professional artist and fine arts educator has been the primary focus of his life for almost 30 years.
As an Expressionist Landscape painter, he’s enjoyed capturing subjects from all over New England in an expressive, painterly manner using a variety of methods, techniques, and tools to demonstrate a unique and personal vision.
Pouring, dripping, staining, wiping, and sometimes going back to brushes and drawing, are all important parts of the creative/physical process to maintain that direct intuitive connection to the subconscious world of endless possibilities.
This kinetic, physical manipulation of various media, has made the painting process more enjoyable and meaningful to explore and discover different ways to create a more evocative personal vision that takes on a life of its own.
Most of his past works are on a larger scale so the viewer can be enveloped and transported directly into the works. The giants of the abstract expressionist movement like Frankenthaler, De Kooning, Pollock, Hoffman, and Rothko, have all been at one point or another, a significant influence on his work. In the last 5 years, he has returned to more recognizable atmospheric landscapes, with a bold, tactile and colorful palette, with strong influences by Wolf Kahn, Ken Elliot, Irma Cerese, and Erin Hanson.
As a fine arts educator, he’s enjoyed capturing students' hearts and minds, as they learn to observe, express, and explore the world, from an artistic perspective, with creative and endless possibilities.
Mark is an award-winning artist, working in both oils and acrylics. He has participated in many local and regional exhibits all over New England. His work is also in many private and public collections across the country from Florida, Ohio, California, Texas, to our neighbors in Canada.
He has recently retired as a Fine Arts educator and now works from his studio/gallery at School Street Art Studios in Gardner, MA. located at 205 School Street Studio J.
